World Absinthe Day, 5th March 2007, was selected by Americans to celebrate Absinthe being imported from France for the first time since the USA ban in 1912. This was a massive step for Absinthe, as the USA is the biggest premium spirits market in the world.

The USA ban is based on Thujone, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) & Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) issued the Absinthe Directive No 2007-5 on the 16th October 2007, which stipulated:

i] Zero Thujone would mean 10ppm (parts per million) or less, so technically a ban is partly still in place. Luckily most absinthes distilled are within this limit anyway; La Fée Parisienne Absinthe Supérieure (Original Classic Strength 68%abv) distilled since May 2000, is based on a pre-ban recipe from the French Absinthe Museum run by Marie-Claude Delahaye, usually registers Thujone at between 7 – 9ppm.

ii] USA does not legally recognize Absinthe as a spirits category such as gin or vodka. Any Absinthe bottle sold in America must carry a descriptor under specialty drinks, in the case of La Fée it is described as ‘Absinthe Supérieure’, and NV Absinthe in America is ‘Absinthe Verte’

La Fée, happily gets to celebrate World Absinthe Day twice a year as we believe the earlier date of 25th May 2000 is a more significant day for Absinthe. This date is when approval arrived from the Director-General of Customs and Indirect Taxes in France, allowing La Fée®, Marie-Claude Delahaye and myself to have Absinthe distilled again in France for export, as we were able to circumvent French Ban 1915 and return distillation of commercial absinthe to France, 7 years earlier than USA start.
